The Harlequin Pen Ref: Harlequin Description: The Limited Edition Harlequin reflects the highest level of skill and art of the master engraver and enameller. Starting with a bar of solid gold, a pen barrel and cap are fashioned, diamond shapes are then hand carved over the entire surface and then detailed lines are hand carved inside each diamond to enhance the reflection of the gold through the enamel. This process, which requires great skill from the master engraver, involves the use of extremely fine hand chisels known as gravers and is a technique known as "Champleve". A single mistake can require the penmaker to begin work again from the very beginning and for the gold to be melted down again. The master penmaker then fills each diamond with specially prepared coloured enamel flux which is then fired in a kiln at around 1000 degrees centigrade, although this would normally melt the gold the firing is so short that it is not affected. Once cooled the enamel is lapped and polished by hand.
