Hermann Struwwelpeter (Untidy Peter) Ref: 19505-2 Description: The HERMANN "Struwwelpeter" 160th Birthday.The German medical practitioner Dr Heinrich Hoffman had gone into the city to buy for his 3 year old son an illustration book as a present for Christmas. When he returned he brought with him an exercise book with empty white pages. He gave this exercise book to his wife and said: Let us make a book of this. And so the "Struwwelpeter" came into being on Christmas 1844. Dr Hoffmann wrote and illustrated this book, without any literary ambitions, only for his son. His friends who had seen the book were so excited that they asked Dr Hoffman to publish these childrens verses and pictures. On Christmas 1845 the "Struwwelpeter" was introduced as a printed book and was transalted into many languages.
